in the navy

I work in a predominantly male industry so, at times, it does feel like I'm in the Navy. I'm not complaining, but I'm also not conforming. It's important to me to be myself and dress the way I want to (within the bounds of the office dress code of course). When I'm put together, I feel better. When I feel good, I work better. So by the transitive property - dressing up for work makes me a better worker. Makes sense, right?

One item of clothing I will never wear in the office is open-toed shoes. I don't care how "dressy" the shoe is or how fresh the pedicure is, I don't want to see feet (even my own) at work. But perhaps I'm old school... What are your thoughts on open toed shoes in the office?

  1. I agree - mostly. My office gets pretty casual in the heat of the summer. Many women wear looser dresses and open toed pumps, sometimes fancy sandals too! I think open toe is OK as long as you still look polished and put together. If you would wear it on the weekend, its a no for the office.

    1. The weekend rule is a good one. I hope you're only referring to shoes because I would wear this skirt on the weekend too! :)

  2. You look really chic in this outfit, and I love the color of your shoes!

I'm okay with open toed shoes at the office, but I never really thought about it not looking professional. I wouldn't wear them to a big meeting, but on a regular day in the office I would. I work in a really small office though :)

Just found your blog, and glad to find another newish blogger like me. I live in Baltimore, but love heading down to DC.

  3. I think this is my favorite out fit on your blog so far...I love it!

On the dressing up for work note...I cringed this morning on the way into the office when I saw a lady dressed in a t-shirt, baggy jeans and flip flops coming in behind me. Just because we may work in a male dominated industry, doesn't mean we have to dress like a sloppy one :)

In my opinion, sandals, however dressy they might be, are a no no in the office. However, I do like a nice peep toe every now and then to change things up a little bit.

I look forward to see what you put together for the weekend! It looks like it's going to be sunny and warmish in DC!

    1. Ugh...flip flops? I would never!! I'm a maybe on peep toe, but I may wear tights with it. I like the socks with sandals look that I'm seeing in magazines - just not sure I can pull it off.

  4. First and foremost, this outfit rocks! Love it.

I wear open-toes heels/flats to work. I try to make the whole outfit look as clean and simple as possible. Nothing too flashy. I've also seen others do it and still look professional. Sandals, though? Nope. That's just not right.

  6. Love this post! Just found your blog, and this was the first thing I saw - you definitely made a good first impression!

Even though I have been into open-toe heels lately (read: my friends have started to drag me away from any shoe shop in sight), I can't deny that I like how these look with the outfit. This look is definitely going to be an inspiration for the time it gets warmer around here where I am. I can already imagine walking through the city centre with my sunglasses on!
